Aegis’ 3D model of the E-3A Sentry represents one of the 16 NATO airborne early warning and control (AWACs) aircraft based in Luxemburg. NATO originally procured 18, one was lost in an accident and another has since been retired. The E-3A is a militarized version of the Boeing 707 airliner. It is most famously distinguished by the addition of a large, rotating saucer shaped dome towards the rear of the fuselage. This ‘radome’ housed a powerful, long range radar. Most E-3s carry a flight crew of 4 and up to 13 mission specialists. Serving E3s have been upgraded over the years; Aegis’ model depicts a current NATO version with features like the passive sensor canoes on the forward fuselage sides. The 3D model has 10 levels of detail, articulated landing gear and rotating radome, switches for lights, flight deck with crew, and crashed state. There are also textures representing the aircraft at night illuminated only by the landing lights, a night vision goggle NVG version, and an infra-red (IR version) depicting the aircraft as it would appear in flight through a thermal sight.
